The trail course is 6.55 Miles which begins inside Craigmeur Recreation Complex, running through wooded paths, old ski trails and open fields.  It then transitions through non-blazed trails into the woods to meet up with the Four Birds Trail.  It follows this Trail up the ridge and for approximately 2 miles before switching over to another non-blazed path in a return route to Craigmeur.

The course will be marked with flour, water based spray chalk, survey flags and live volunteers.  2 water / aid points, one approximately at 1.8 miles and the second at approximately 5 miles.  There is also food and aid at the start finish area. There is a cut off of 2 hours per loop. Walkers WILL NOT finish the course in under 2 hours / loop.

This is NOT a trail race for beginning trail runners.  You will run through water, mud, over rocks, possibly over downed trees, on blazed trails and also areas where there is no trail.  The course will be so well marked that a second grader could follow trail, but it will not be easy.   All races start and finish at the pavilion at the Craigmeur Recreation Complex. The loop is not USATF certified, but we measured it and it is at least the distance we advertise.  This event happens rain or shine.

  • The Muddy Marathon starts at 8:00AM.  Four loops of the delightfully scenic course.
  • The Marathon Relay starts at 8:00 AM.  This allows people to form 2 or 4 person teams to complete the marathon distance.  The transition area is directly in front of the start finish area.
  • The Half-Marathon starts at 10:30 AM. Two loops of the delightfully scenic course.
  • The Quarter - Marathon starts at 12:00 PM.  One loop of 6.55 miles (approximate, not USATF certified).

The park has toilets, covered pavilion, picnic tables, kids' playground, plenty of parking.... Bring lawn chairs or blankets to relax after you're done running!

First time doing this event and I thought it was great ! Its not for wimps !! More mountain climbing than running but its the miles that make it challenging. Running through mudd is not easy but when you hit the streams, its refreshing and you want to dive in, just to rinse off !!! Not enough water but thats OK, we sampled the micro brewed beer before we started, just to get pumped up! Great POST RACE PARTY with pulled pork sandwiches and Cricket Creek beer on tap. Will do it again next year if I can talk my buddies into it !! One loop only !!

Thoughts that ran trough my mind during the race...____Beginning of the race: Well this is different...__Middle of the race: You\'ve got to be kidding me...__Last leg of race: God, if you get me through this I will never drink again (well, maybe that\'s a stretch).____This race is not a leisurely stroll trough the park -- It\'s a cross between and a hike in the woods and a military maneuver. It has everything an adventure seeker needs: Mud, rocky trails, bouldering, wading through swamps, rock climbing, hurdling fallen trees, you name it. The race is challenging and fun and you will want to bow down and give respect to all of those who completed the full marathon. One loop was definately enough for me.____You wouldn\'t want to do this race every weekend, but it is definately an adventure that is worth experiencing -- and you will be glad you made it across the finish line.____Could use more water on the course and hose stations after the race to wash off the grit.____Great beer afterwards -- good BBQ -- very friendly crowd. ______

Unbelieveable.. this was not a trail race, this was a rock climb/swamp crawl/adventure race. I just did the one loop and that was certainly enough. It was fun and certainly different than your average trail run. Great beer after the race and good swag - beer glass, water bottles, giveaways. Rick the race director did a good job of organization. It should be on the list at least once.

This is not a easy day in the park race, this is an adventure in the woods. I was injured and forced to be a spectator and i think more than 50% of those crossing the finish said - wow, that was much harder than i thought it would be. I think the 2 hour limit to finish a loop sounds much more doable than it is, as very few actually made it, and most didn\'t look to sad to skip the second loop on the half. To all who finished a loop without major injury, you rock! To the one guy who finished with a broken wrist the had swollen up to be the size of his head, you are amazing.
Challenges of the course aside, the heat made the lack of water super hard on the quarter people who started at noon. IF you do this race be sure to bring a camelback. you can have nothing in your hands as you need them for climbs, it has to be on your back.
